As an alternative option to the classic Inca Trail tour, the Salkantay Mountain is one of the best alternative routes to reach Machu Picchu. Additionally, it offers a complete and enriching experience.
The Salkantay Trail is one of the most valued and well-known routes in Cusco, as an alternative to the renowned Inca Trail. Undoubtedly, it is the best option to experience the magnificence of the paths our Inca ancestors traveled for years.
The highlight of this journey is the Salkantay Pass, located at approximately 4700 meters above sea level, near the snow-capped Salkantay Mountain. However, one cannot fail to mention the wonderful view of the Cusco jungle valleys. It is truly an unparalleled experience!


Itinerary

DAY 1: Cusco – Laguna Humantay – Soraypampa

We start the day picking you up from your hotel at 4:20 AM. We will then take a tourist bus passing through the towns of Izcuchaca and Limatambo arriving at Mollepata (2900m) where we will be at approximately 7:30 AM where we will have our first breakfast and we will be able to leave our 05 kilos for our riders. Then we will take a transport that will take us to Challacancha for 1 hour (3380m). From there our hike will begin in approximately 3 hours arriving at Soraypampa (3900m) where we will be arriving at 1:30 PM. There we will have our first lunch and first camp (glass cabins). After lunch we will go to the beautiful Humantay Lagoon.

HUMANTAY LAGOON: Ascent for 1:30 minutes where we will arrive at the impressive Humantay lagoon (4220 meters above sea level) where we can appreciate the turquoise color of the lagoon and the Apu Humantay snow-capped mountain and then beginning to descend for 40 minutes to our Soraypampa camp for tea time which is approximately at 6:00 p.m. and then we will have our delicious dinner prepared by our chef, finally we will pass our glass cabins.

DAY 2: Soraypampa – Paso Salkantay – Colpapampa

At 5:00 am we will have a nutritious breakfast and then continue our walk, we start from the point of Soraypamapa to the highest point Abra Salkantay (3 hours) where we can appreciate the imposing snow-capped mountains Salkantay, Humantay, Tucarhuay and Pumasillo (4650m.a.s.l) passing through Salkantaypampa and Soyrococha where we will appreciate a small lagoon then we will begin the descent to Huayracmachay (3 hours) (3800m.a.s.l) where we will have our lunch then we will continue the walk where you will notice a dramatic change in the landscape, this walk is truly impressive then we continue down to Colpapampa (3 hours) (2900m.a.s.l) where will be our second camp that are domes.

DAY 3: Colpapampa – Playa Sahuayaco – Lucmabamba

We will have our breakfast at 6:00 am, then we will walk for 5:30 am all through our jungle eyebrow with flat ascents and descents, on this journey we will appreciate coffee plantations, orchids, begonias, bromeliads and many natural plants used for natural medicine, arriving at our lunch point Playa Sahuayaca where we will have the buffet lunch and board a bus to Lucmabamba camp. Arriving at our camp we will have the option to visit the hot springs located in Cocalmayo (Santa Teresa) that are not included in our package and we return to our camp at 6:00 pm, for our tea and dinner.

DAY 4: Lucmabamba – Hidroeléctrica – Aguas Calientes

The sunrise will be within a tropical area full of history and nature, we will have our breakfast ready to taste, we will continue our trip towards Llactapata for 2 hours to the ruins, then we will descend towards hydroelectric for 2 hours where we have lunch in the restaurant, then we will continue with our walk through the tropical area towards the town of Aguas Calientes for 3 hours and we will settle in the hostel and wait for our dinner in a restaurant.

DAY 5: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco

We’ll wake up very early in the morning for a visit to Machu Picchu, where we’ll have a guided tour of the Machu Picchu citadel to visit temples, terraces, palaces, and platforms. You’ll then have time to take photos and explore on your own.

Afterwards, you’ll return to the town of Aguas Calientes to await your Expedition train at 6:20 p.m.

Recommendations

  • Pack as light as possible, as there are no porters on this hike.
  • Bring your important documents with you, such as a passport, valid student ID (if applicable), and immigration card.
  • Bring a small, lightweight backpack for the trip.
  • Remember to bring a water reservoir, such as Camelbags, with a capacity of at least 2-3 liters.
  • Wear comfortable, lightweight hiking boots with good soles.
  • Don’t forget to include toiletries, such as sunscreen, facial moisturizer, insect repellent, hand sanitizer, wet wipes, a toothbrush and toothpaste, toilet paper, personal medication, and a first aid kit.
  • Please note backpack size restrictions inside Machu Picchu; backpacks larger than 25 liters will not be allowed.
  • Don’t forget to bring a sun hat, rain gear, a wool hat, a camera, music, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, and a small plastic bag for waste.
  • Bring extra money for souvenirs, drinks, and tips.
  • Consider bringing earplugs for better sleep during your trip.
